Darker Shades of Blue: The Rogue Pilot
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (31 January, 1999)
Authors: Tony T. Kern and Anthony T. Kern
Average review score:

GREAT BOOK - MUST READ FOR SERIOUS PILOTS
Excellent book and a useful outline for self evaluation.

Stories used to illustrate the points are, for the most part, well written and also appear to be well researched.

I gave it only 4 stars because it seemed to suffer from a mild case of political correctness. Examples -

According to other sources the F-14 loss of control on departure accident which took 5 lives had a tie to the push to get Carla Hultgreen and her fellow F-14 pilot thru training. The doomed pilot of this airplane was rated below standards but above the female pilots in the same squadron and thus allowed to continue.

The discussion of the Ron Brown crash places a lot of blame on the squadron leadership for sending the aircraft on a mission in violation of regs. However, the major breakdown was the failure of Air Force leadership to tell the State and Commerce Dept that if you expect us to fly with this primitive nav equipement don't expect service to all these airports and the President and Congress who in their rush to cut defense spending put these aircraft on the line. Perhaps a discussion of the fact that the female officer in command may have felt some special pressure to complete the mission was warranted.

Another minor complaint is that more details would help in understanding the issues surounding some of the crashes . For example if the reported weather is included then stating the applicable minimums, rather than just saying the weather was below minimums would have been helpful.

Beyond these few issues this is an excellent read.

Darker, disturbing hues
Mr. Kern has suceeded in bringing to the forefront what I consider one of the greatest challenges to aviation: the rogue, undisciplined pilot. Rogues will continue to be a source of danger not only to themselves but their crews, passengers and people on the ground and this book should be required reading for everyone with a certificate (and even those who aren't pilots). Kudos to Mr. Kern for an eye-opening look at this threat.

Spot and handle dysfunctional aviators and organizations
This outstanding book takes the lessons of Flight Discipline and Redefining Airmanship a step further, by offering insights into individual and organizational traits that can corrupt professionalism and compromise safety.

A must-read for all aviation professionals.

Letters from Dwight
Published in Hardcover by Xenos Books (June, 1998)
Author: Gary Kern
Average review score:

An excellent book for "chapter" readers
The other reviewers are right about this book's readability.

But I would also like to alert readers who love their books in short, encapsulated chapters to this book as well.

Each transcribed letter ties into others, but the characters are painted memorably enough to allow lapses of days between readings.

A great book for vacation or business travel.

Kern's brilliant description: Down and out in Riverside, CA
This is an incredibly interesting series of letters written by an ex-professor of Russian who, through a series of misfortunes, finds himself forced to live in a ghetto in Riverside, CA, along with an incredible parade of oddballs and freaks too unbelievable to have been made up. This book is both serious and hilarious. I couldn't put it down! When I finished I passed it along to my wife and friends, all of whom reported that, they too, could not put it down.

This book is fascinating!
It is a true story of a Princeton scholar who moved to California and soon lost all he had - his professorship, his family, his career - as told through transcriptions of letters sent to friends on audio cassette. Kern's style is masterful, verging on magical: I cannot otherwise explain why this book is so captivating. There is no plot, since it is a series of letters, and being a dean in an institution of higher education, I can certainly identify with the vagaries of the Academy and it's disregard for the individual, as visited on Mr. Kern. Yet none of this explains how or why this book gets under the skin. My only conclusion is that through an intelligent yet accessible style, Kern presents himself as a modern day Everyman and the story of his life is a morality play of the nineties. In this story he encounters a series of strange individuals (too bizarre to have been made up!), searches for work, searches for love, and ultimately, finds the woman who takes him away from the human swamp known as Dwight street, from which his letters are sent. One can only hope that, if visited with similar circumstances, one would respond as rationally, and ultimately publish a book about it! I am giving copies of this book to intelligent and insightful friends who I know will appreciate it.

Siberian Huskies Complete Owner's Manual
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (15 April, 2000)
Author: Kerry V. Kern
Average review score:

A general guide to the Husky-a must for first time owners.
This small book could not have hoped to cover "Everything..." as it claims, but I have found it to be useful on many occasions. It provides a general guide to almost every conceivable situation and concern, providing the quality of advice a new owner needs. An owner of a new sibe puppy will want to supplement this book, so they should consult their breeder-use an established husky kennel, not a backyard breeder-other texts, and their vet. Other topics, like medical/health and diet, will likewise be covered in more detail in other places. Don't stop with this book but do get it if you are with sibe. And hang on to that leash!

Siberian Huskies (Barron's A Complete Pet Owner's Manual)
Although relatively small (75 pages), this paperback covers a little bit of everything pertaining to Sibes. From breed standards to training to breeding. For it's price it covers a lot of ground but might not go into the detail one might expect from a larger book. However, for it's size and price I feel it is an excellent book worthy of purchase for any owner of the Siberian Husky.

Siberian Huskies : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutritio
Exellent! Out of all the Siberian Husky books I have read, which is about 6, this one was the most helpful. I have a Husky of my own and if I could say something about this book is that it was so helpful! I recomend it for all want to be and all owners of Siberian Huskies!

Labrador Retrievers: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Diseases, Breeding, and Behavior (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)

Dude! What a cool book!
I'm only 11 years old and I know so much about my lab. It is such a great intro to labs, and it tells you alot of interesting facts. I reccomend you read it even if you don't have a lab. It is the most fact packed Labrador book I have read, and it's for a good price too! If I went somewhere else to get this book, it probably would have cost a lot more! This book is fun to read, even for kids.

Everyone Wins
If you are to buy one book before purchasing your pet Labrador, make this 'That Book'. To read other books after this will leave you saying, "I knew that". Those looking at Labradors for Working or Hunting dogs will require additional purchases; But for those looking at Labrador's for a Pet or Companion - this fact-filled manual will be all you need, and more. Not only does the manual explain the do's and don'ts of Lab Ownership (from pup's to old age), it provides the reader with important insights to the reasons behind them. From Training, to Grooming, to the Health of your Lab this easy to read book will keep you interested as you learn more about you're new Best Friend on every page. The knowledge gained from having this book on your shelf, coupled with the price you paid to get it there, guarantees everybody wins...the biggest winner being 'YOUR LAB'.

The best pet book I've ever read
I don't even have a Lab puppy yet, and I learned a lot from this book. The section on training the puppy was excellent, well-written and very easy to understand. Learning about the history of the Labrador Retrievers was interesting too. Now, all I need to do is get a puppy...

I Love You With All My Heart
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (May, 1998)
Author: Noris Kern
Average review score:

What a sweet book!
This book is beautifully illustrated and is so sweet. My 18 month old son asks to be read this book constantly. You can't help but fall in love with the pictures and the story. What a perfect way to express a mother's love.

Cudos:
The main character exemplifies a child's questioning, exploration, and discovery. A tender example for parental expression. Pictures are cuddly, too! I want my children to learn this important bonding value. Please preview if there is a physically or emotionally absent parent.

Beautiful and Sweet
A very uncomplicated book, this is a nice clean message to younger people. I actually gave it to my boyfriend recently. The paintings are lovely. It would make a great Valentine's Day gift, and it will last longer than chocolate.

People's Temple, People's Tomb

It get's Better
I really enjoyed this book.I like the way the book brings you into focus about what was going on and holds you there till the end. There are some good photos in this book and copies of letters that are interesting to read in the back of the book.

Very informative and interesting
Kerns' book gives the reader insight into what it was like to be a part of the Jim Jones cult. His personal experience is moving, and the documents contained in the book make it even more interesting. What a tragedy these deaths were, but by reading this book, one gets a profile of the type of person who is susceptible to this kind of sick cult.

Everyday Wellness for Women
Published in Paperback by Dr Deborah Kern (24 February, 1999)
Author: Deborah Kern Ph.D.
Average review score:

So easy to understand, I wish all authors wrote this way.
Dr. Kern offers practical tips for real, everyday women. It was a quick, easy and enjoyable read. I refer to it often for inspiration and to remind myself that my simple, daily changes are changing my life. My only regret is that there are just 122 pages. I can't wait to read more from this inspiring author!

What a great inspirational book.
This book is great for women of all ages. Dr.Kern does a great job of teaching you how to deal with the everyday challenges that we face, while staying focused on our own needs. Great relaxation and meditation techniques.

Comprehensive and well-focused; a tremendous resource
Dr. Kern's book is a tremendous resource for all women. It is both practical and uplifting. It gives women needed resources to improve their attitudes and their very lives.

Mind Games: The Guide to Inner Space
Published in Paperback by Quest Books (December, 1998)
Authors: Jean Houston, Kern Foundation, and Robert E. L. Masters
Average review score:

Good Stuff, but Hard to Use
The exercises in Mind Games are life changing. The only problem is that they require a group of individuals that is often difficult to acquire, and the role of 'guide' keeps one individual from participating and reaping the benefits of the games. If you have an appropriate context in which to play the games, (e.g. church group, yoga class, etc.) by all means do not pass up this oppurtunity to 'explore your inner space.'

Psychadelic Experiences and Personal Growth
When I first came across this book I was rather sceptical about hypnosis in specific and the psychadelic experience in general. If you can find a close friend or two (or up to five or six) to play these "games" all the way through you will find yourself in a much better place.

Not only are the games fun and educational, they help develop imagination, intuition, and other faculties you didnt know you had. (or I didnt know I had anyway) Personal development aside, the exersizes in this book make for a great way to relax and help reduce stress and fatigue. I enjoyed the book imensley and tip my hat to Masters and Houston for putting it together. Thanks.

if you like to trip, you'll love this book
this book forced me to use muscles i didn't even know i had. me and my friends shared experienes we'll hold on to for the rest of our lives. you should experience this book.

New York Girls
Published in Hardcover by TASCHEN America Llc (April, 1997)
Author: Richard Kern
Average review score:

Wonderful work
There are very few that can pull off flash photography like Richard Kern. Although some of the models were a little too bland to pull off the subject matter, he shows us some gems that make buying the book worthwhile. What you get from his flash work in this book is the starkness of the themes, and the sense that these could easily be home photo's taken by you or me.

Duh...
Richard Kern's work explores sexual interests of a different stripe-- these images are not for the unimaginative or easily placated viewer. If you're interested in erotic photographs of intense, interesting (and possibly insane) women in a variety of unusual situations, this book is for you. If you're looking for "the girl next door" (whatever that is), go get a Playboy.

Fetish As a State of Mind
At first glance it is tempting to see Richard Kern as an imitator of Eric Kroll. This is hardly the case, but the comparison is inevitable. Both are New York photographers who specialize in fetish work, primarily photographing women. Both have a good sense of graphic imagery. In truth, though, the similarities end at the surface. Their intent and approach are radically different.

Kroll has a strong background in commercial and fashion photography which gives his images a more glitzy, mainstream look. Kern came to New York and immediately fell in with the extreme sex crowd. He spent his early years publishing little, Xeroxed magazines and making short films with such dark stars as Lydia Lunch, Nick Zedd and Cassandra Stark. In a sense, "New York Girls," marks a shift closer to mainstream fetish work.

These are harsh, revealing images. His color work reminds me a bit of Nan Goldin, but his black and white images are uniquely his own. The sexuality is blatant, sometimes erotic and sometimes not. There is a profound alienation in his images. These are people being sexual to and for themselves. They rarely meet the viewer's eyes. When they do face the camera it is to issue a challenge, to dare the viewer to cross the line into a solipsistic universe of tension and release.

Many of the photographs are haunting. There seem to be layers of content that keep the viewer's attention for hours. If you haven't encountered Kern's work before or a looking for the right collection of fetish work you will find this and excellent introduction to photography's more challenging visions.
